Dive Day! We got up early - about 6:15, and had a breakfast of juice, yogurt & muesli that we'd bought earlier. We headed out around 7:15 and got there 25 minutes later. We are diving with Ocean Encounters, which is on the property of the resort called Lions Dive. They also offer an aquarium, snorkeling tours and other water activities. Arriving early gave us plenty of time to park, bring out gear down to the boats, check in and get our rental BCDs and regulators. The boat left promptly at 8:30 am and Alex and Anita were our dive masters, with Nas being our boat captain.
The first stop was Small Wall, which Alex said was his favorite. We swam up and then back down part of the wall. The coral looked very healthy here and we were pleasantly surprised at the number of different fish we saw. The boat took us back to Ocean Encounters for a short time and then we headed out for a second dive at Shipwreck Point. There you could see a few pieces of long lost ship parts, including a propeller and anchor. There used to be part of a ship as well, but has been moved to be part of the Underwater Aquarium.
Both dives were amazing! We saw so many fish plus a couple of squid - those were a first for us! We also saw smooth trunk fish, spotted cow fish, lobster, shrimp, parrot fish, angel fish, a couple of scorpion fish (so hard to see!!) - the list went on & on. Mike's camera battery died near the end of the second dive, but he got a lot of amazing pictures all the same. Greta had the Go-Pro and used it for some video and a few pictures.
After that, we headed back to the hotel to relax for a bit. Greta ran out and bought some more Band-Aids, as she cut her thumb washing the cheese slicer the night before, and Mike worked on downloading pictures from diving. We had the Olympics on in the background and saw the MN team win silver for curling - pretty funny to be watching that while near the equator! We made reservations for Maira's Kitchen so that we could actually eat there this time around.
We walked down to the Queen Emma Bridge and Mike got some more pictures. We walked along the waterway until we started up a hill and found what we figured out later was the old cruise ship terminal. The new one is right outside of our hotel. From there, we got to Maira's Kitchen a bit early, but they were still able to seat us outside in a covered patio. Mike ordered the goat stoba, which is a native Curacao dish. It's a bit like stew, and was accompanied by some pickled veggies, rice, and a salsa-like sambal; it was excellent. Greta ordered the Red Snapper filet that came with veggies and fries; not as good as Mike's but still excellent. After that we walked down to our hotel, watched a little bit of the Olympics and called it a night.
