We slept in, although since Curacao is 2 hours ahead of time, our bodies were still set up for CST. After a bit of research, Mike found a place about 10 minutes minutes away called "Van Gogh Specialty Coffee & City Roastery". We crossed the bridge and had an easy walk there. Because it was Sunday morning, a lot of places were closed up so we're not sure how busy that area usually is. We sat inside for breakfast as they were jackhammering right outside the front door. Greta got an iced flat white coffee and Mike got an espresso. For food, Greta got a plate with soft boiled eggs, avocado, bacon, sprouts and artisan bread; Mike got French toast topped with fruit. There were a lot of wonderful looking pastries in the case as well. From there we continued walking down the island a bit until we got to Avila, where the Budget Rent-A-Car was located. Mike had reserved the car through them ahead of time, so it was a quick task and we headed off in a bright red Toyata Yaris. From there, we just drove a bit further down the same road, and we stopped at Ocean Encounters, which is who we will be diving with. We finalized our check in, paid for our rental gear and got a quick walk through of the site. We will be returning on Tuesday for our first dive. After that, we drove around for a bit, including circling "The Ring" which is a circular highway around the harbor area. There is a very tall bridge that can be seen from our hotel. We were able to find a stop part way up where we could stop and take a couple pictures, looking towards the water. Then we drove around a bit more. Traffic was getting very heavy on the side streets as it's currently Karnaval, and they were setting up for the Children's Parade, which started at 2. From there, we found a Centrum (Dutch Supermarket) where we picked up some drinks, cheese and snacks for the room. After that we drove back to the hotel - they do not provide bags at the grocery store, so we just had to load it all into the car, and then got a bag from the room to bring what we didn't carry in the first trip.
We sat on the balcony for a bit and read, then went down to check out the infinity salt pool. It's set up on a man-made beach and overlooks the actual water, but seems very nice. we read a bit more in the room and then headed back towards the Queen Emma Bridge, which was where the parade was supposed to conclude at 4. We stopped at Swinging Old Woman brewery for a drink, as that had been recommended by Jeremiah at the drive shop, and then started walking up the parade route. The street was very crowded with people and blocked off for the parade. It typically consisted of a large semi-flat bed with music blaring, followed by a large group of children in full costume, sometimes dance, sometimes walking. The further we walked up the parade route, we saw more of the same - a semi with loud music and a lot of children dancing behind it. We got near the end of the parade (we think) and turned off. It was VERY crowded and quite warm outside. We walked back to our hotel on side streets, and cooled off in the room for a bit.
Mike found an Indian restaurant that was set to open at 6:30, so we headed out. Tandoori Heights was just a few blocks away, and was a rooftop restaurant. We first were seated right and ordered our food/drinks but then moved to a different covered table when it started to lightly rain. The food was wonderful! We got a starting order of samosas, an order of garlic naan, and then shared two entrees. Both the lamb biryani and shimp curry were amazing! We also had a couple of drinks - Mike had their specialty magarita and Greta ordered the caipirinha. Then it was back to the hotel for the night. The Superbowl had already started, but it was broadcast on a NBC station out of New York, so we got to see the commercials.
