Greta's blog, Day 3 (Monday March 8th):

We had an easy going morning, although we were awoken by the crowing roosters. There are chickens wandering all over the place here. We decided this would be our driving-around day. Mike was curious what places for sale with ocean access were like in the area, plus we wanted to see a bit of a few of the different Keys.

We drove up as far as Marathon Key, which was about an hour. We saw SOMETHING in the air on the way , and couldn't figure out what it was. Eventually, by Googling "blimp Florida Keys" we figured out it was a blimp called Fat Albert.

Per Google : "Tethered Aerostat Radar Systems are their correct names, one of the "Fat Alberts" blimps are equipped to beam TV Marti signals to Cuba that are routinely jammed by the Cuban Government. "Fat Albert 2" is used to detect boats and planes approaching the Florida coast from up to 150 miles away." Due to budget cuts, this blimp, over Cudjoe Key, along with other ones in the US, will end their "flight" on March 15, 2021, so we were lucky to see it.

When we got to Marathon Key, we found a place to eat called Burdine's Waterfront. It was a very low key place on the water that was in between a lot of industrial and harbor businesses. It was nothing fancy (food was served on paper plates, canned beverages only) - and was exactly what we were in the mood for. We shared a poke bowl that had a very generous serving of tuna, plus a couple piece of grilled pineapple and fried won ton chips. We also shared a shrimp plate which had blackened shrimp, hushpuppies and coleslaw. We added on a plate of hand-cut seasoned fries. Everything was OUTSTANDING. We also stopped for bit at Captain Hook's Dive Center (where we were originally planning on diving on Thursday). We visited with them for a bit, but it sounds like diving won't be going on all week - still too much wind.

We then headed out to check out various places on the water that were for sale. We weren't planning on buying anything that day, nor were we planning on touring inside any homes. We were just curious to see what waterfront (or ocean acces) homes in a given price range were like from Key to Key. In Marathon, there was a nearby city that was quite well to do - there were some very nice looking places there, although everything was very close together - we also so a lot of vacation rentals. There was also a newer development going in near the highway that looked quite nice. In Big Pine Key, the first neighborhood was saw had a few nicer looking places (not necessarily for sale) and other places that were in very tough shape. But then a nearby neighborhood was in much better shape. This is where the endangered Key Deer live and we saw a few - they are about the size of a white tail fawn . There was a sign there noting that there were 75 killed by cars in 2020, and 7 so far in 2021. There are many signs reminding you not to feed them and to watch out for them.

We also stopped at Rams Head Key and Little Torch Key. Sometimes it was more to just get a feel for what the neighborhoods looked like, and in one case, to see a place that recently sold. It's always good to see places "in real life" because then you get a better idea for what the yard really looks like, how close it is to the highway, what sort of water access does it really have, etc.

After that, we drove back to Key West, with a quick stop at Publix to get some bacon and a few paper supplies. Then we headed back to the condo for the evening. Our lunch was so big that we opted to skip supper and just had some snacks that evening.
